Is your bias showing? (June 28, 2016)

In a recent letter to the editor, I wrote, With the possible exception of Golden State, Liberty Utilities is the least expensive water supplier in our area. This is what I meant to say, which is why I wrote it. This statement is based on fact, and I have data to support it.

For some unfathomable reason, someone at the Daily Press took it upon himself to edit my letter so that it read, With the possible exception of Golden State, Liberty Utilities is the least expensive (private) water supplier in our area (Alternative water suppliers, Daily Press, June 28, 2016).

Whether your editor was trying to be helpful or just attempting to display what he erroneously believes to be his superior knowledge in the matter, if you are publishing this over my name, my preference would be that you use my words, not someone else’s. At the very least, if your concern were genuine that I had misspoken, you could have contacted me prior to publication to confirm my intentions. In failing to do so, you give the impression that the paper has decided to repeat the same false propaganda used by the Town of Apple Valley, rather than investigating impartially.
